Two high school graduates were honoured with bursaries at the Guyana Ex-Police Association of Canada’s (GEPAC) annual fund-raising ball on Saturday night May 8, 2004 in Scarborough.
Paula DeLyon and Shaun Yow received the awards instituted to honour the memory of the organization’s founder, John Chance.
DeLyon, who graduates from Mary Ward Catholic High School next month, has been admitted to the Law and Society program in the Faculty of Arts at York University.
Yow, who graduated from Henry Carr Catholic Secondary School last June, is enrolled in Seneca College’s two-year Law and Security Administration program. He aspires to be a police officer.
The awards are presented annually to final-year high school students or graduates pursuing law enforcement studies.
Each bursary is worth $500.
Chance, who was instrumental in the establishment of GEPAC in 1997, died two years later.
Prior to emigrating to Canada in 1982, he served as a member of the Guyana Police Force for 33 years, reaching the rank of Chief Inspector. He was also a member of the West Indies Regiment that took part in World War II.
